"Blue boat or the Drift"
A collective exhibition at the Cargo des Arts.
I had the joy and honor of being invited by Francis Lôter to participate in the collective exhibition "Blue Boat ou la dérive" at the Cargo des Arts, from November 2019 to March 2020. In 2016, a news made headlines in New Caledonia: several vessels in an illegal fishing situation had been arrested by the French Army. Wooden boats, all blue... Coming from Vietnam (after a perilous crossing of more than 40 days) fishing for sea cucumbers in Caledonian waters, those who would soon be called the new Pacific pirates had nevertheless managed to escape on one of their boats, abandoning the other boats on the spot. The Cargo des Arts, in this exhibition led by Francis Lôter, staged with an installation the fragments of a boat reconstructed into a ghost ship. Each of the artists of the Cargo des Arts told this story in one or more works, taking a position on the defense of the sea, and its resources that are essential to local life.
For this exhibition, I presented a collection of 11 unique numbered pieces, in silver and wood from the Blue Boat. It was really very moving for me to hold these pieces of wood from pirate ships in my hands, to feel all the human adventure they were carrying, to imagine everything they had witnessed since their former tree life in a Cambodian forest, their transformation into a boat in a Vietnamese shipyard, their epic crossing into the waters of the lagoon with clandestine fishermen on board. It was with great respect and acute awareness of these intertwined stories that I worked on these pieces. I voluntarily opted for simplicity and sobriety to highlight these treasures: a simple strip of silver for a rectangle of wood, no loss, no glue or welding.
